Indian Campaigns

7th U. S. Cavalry, 1890This finding aid lists state archives materials regarding the Indian Campaigns that are useful for genealogical research. Some archives material has been microfilmed. Most microfilm circulates through interlibrary loan, however, original documents do not. Please contact our reference staff for information on how to request copies of original documents.

Archives materials not on microfilm should be requested on a call slip. The locator numbers can be obtained from the reference staff in the research room.

The society also maintains Fort Hays State Historic Site relating to the Indian Campaigns.

Descriptive Rolls, 19th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. 1868. 1 oversize folder. Lists of individuals who served in the 19th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry regiment in a campaign against Plains Indians. Contain name, rank, place of birth, age, occupation, enlistment date and physical description. Arranged alphabetically by company and surname.

Enlistment Papers. 1863. 1 box. Enlistment records for Miami, Johnson, and Linn counties. Arranged alphabetically.

Enlistment Papers (selected), Kansas Volunteer Regiments. 1861-1869. 6 boxes. Forms filled out for each recruit which list name, nativity, occupation, physical description, etc. Arranged by regiment and company. Boxes 1-5 contain Civil War enlistments. Box 6 contains 19th Kansas Cavalry enlistments. Index available online.

Enlistment and discharge papers, 1880, 1884. 1 folder. Includes name, rank, regiment, length of service, and reason for discharge. Arranged alphabetically.

Muster rolls and payrolls, Kansas National Guard, 1867-1917. 8 boxes (4 oversize). Include name, where and when enlisted, age, physical description, nativity, remarks and pay rate for various companies. Arranged chronologically or by regiment.

Muster rolls and other documents, 18th & 19th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. 1867-1869. 1 box and 3 oversize folders. Lists of individuals who served in the 18th and 19th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry regiments in campaigns against hostile Indians with information about their muster-in and/or muster-out and other diverse types of documents. Arranged by company.

Muster rolls and payrolls, Indian scare, 1874. 1 oversize folder. Rolls of men enlisted in 1874 to fight Indians. Include name, rank, when and where mustered and by whom, and pay rate. Arranged by company.

Officers commissioned. 1873-1886. 2 volumes. Register of officers appointed. Include name, rank, date commissioned, unit, place of residence, promotions, rosters of companies organized in 1879, and remarks. Arranged by gubernatorial administration and organization or by regiment and staff function.

Officers commissioned. 1863-1883. 14 volumes. Include name, rank, date of commission, company and regiment, home residence, promotion, discharge, etc. Arranged chronologically by regiment.

Recruiting commissions and miscellaneous papers, Kansas State Militia. 1868. 1 box. Documents concerning the recruitment of men for the 1st Battalion, Kansas State Militia, in response to Indian raids. Includes some muster rolls and correspondence. Arranged by company.

Registers of officer and brevet commissions, 1880-1917. 10 volumes. Various registers of officers commissioned. Include name, rank, company, regiment, residence, date of commission, and remarks. Arranged chronologically by date of commission.

Roster, 19th Volunteer Regiment. 1868. 1 volume. Lists of individuals who served in the 19th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry regiment in a campaign against hostile Indians. Include name, age, city of residence, rank, dates of enlistment and muster, term of enlistment, date and place of discharge, and remarks. Arranged by company and rank, then alphabetically by name. Alphabetical index at beginning of volume.

Roster Books, Kansas National Guard. 1882-1914. 15 volumes. Registers of men who served in various units. Include name, age, residence, rank, when mustered in, physical description, when left service or state and why, service record, whether appointed or commissioned, and nativity. Some give occupation and marital status. Indexes available (incomplete). Arranged by regiment and company and chronologically by dates of service. Some available on microfilm as listed below:
