Thematic Nomination: Historic Railroad Resources of Kansas

The Leavenworth Terminal Railway and Bridge Company formed in 1892 with the goal of building a second bridge across the Missouri River at Leavenworth and expanding the city's railroad infrastructure. The company soon erected the Terminal Bridge, which carried railroad traffic, vehicles, and pedestrians from the town of Stillings on the Missouri side of the river to Leavenworth, landing at Choctaw Street. The company also constructed a freight depot and rail yard at Seventh and Choctaw Streets to service the railroad that leased its tracks. The building clearly conveys its historic function as a freight depot and features a rectangular footprint with the long axis aligned paralleling the railroad tracks; brick and wood construction; a combined massing of one- and two-story blocks; and multiple large freight bays in the long elevations. The Terminal Depot served its historic function into the late 20th century. It was nominated as part of the "Historic Railroad Resources of Kansas" multiple property listing for its association with local transportation history and its architectural significance as a good example of a railroad freight house constructed in Kansas at the end of the 19th century.

Little Stranger Church & Cemetery

The Little Stranger Church congregation built this wood-frame house of worship in 1868, and at the time of nomination, it stands to be the oldest wood-frame church in Kansas listed in the registers. The congregation traced its roots back to a group of settlers from Farley, Missouri, who arrived in Leavenworth County in 1858. Frequent announcements in the newspapers regarding various guest preachers suggest the church may have relied on the assistance of area churches for Sunday sermons. Despite the apparent success of the church in the 1910s, it closed in 1919 during the flu epidemic, never to reconvene again. The building remained shuttered until 1929 when a 4-H club requested to use the building for its meetings. Various organizations held meetings in the building through the mid-20th century. The church stands as a reminder of mid-19th century building techniques. It has a rectangular form and gable-front roof that presents a straight-forward image of utilitarian design. The associated cemetery includes more than 100 known graves, with the earliest deaths dating from the late 1850s and early 1860s, suggesting the cemetery may have pre-dated the construction of the church. It is nominated for its local significance in the areas of early settlement history and architecture.

North Broadway School

The construction of North Broadway School in 1923 was part of a broader effort to erect four school buildings in Leavenworth, which included Third Avenue School, Cleveland Park School, and Sumner Elementary School. The Leavenworth School District hired architect Charles A. Smith to design the buildings. He designed the North Broadway and Third Avenue schools with identical layouts and nearly identical facades, with the only variation being the cast stone ornamentation. Gordon Walker Construction Company of Salina built the two schools. The first day of classes at North Broadway School was September 17, 1923, and 382 students were in attendance. The building functioned continuously as an elementary school until 1999, and then for various educational programs until 2010 when it was sold. The two-story U-shaped building occupies an entire block and features a concrete structure with tapestry brick cladding and cast stone ornamentation. The pointed-arch cast stone door at the front entrances and diamond-patterned brickwork on the front and rear elevations reflect the Tudor Revival style. It was nominated for its local significance in the areas of education and architecture.
