1790 Out-of-State Census
The non-Kansas federal census listed below are available to patrons in the research room of the Center for Historical Research. The census is on microfilm, except where indicated otherwise. These materials are not available through interlibrary loan. Please see our reference correspondence policy for the reference assistance we are able to provide. We do not make copies from printed census.
Information Contained in the Census
The 1790 census is in book form, and all volumes are indexed. The schedules for Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Virginia are lost, presumably burned during the British invasion of Washington in 1814. The Kentucky and Virginia schedules have been reconstructed from state censuses and tax lists.
Each entry in the 1790 census shows the name of the head of household, number of free white males aged 16 and over, number of free white males under 16, number of free white females, number of all other free persons, and number of slaves. It does not show the name of anyone other than the head of household.
