Notes
This finding aid describes materials on microfilm held by the Kansas State Historical Society. Microfilm may be used in the Research Room in the society’s Center for Historical Research during regular research hours. Microfilm may also be borrowed through interlibrary loan for your use at a participating public, academic, or research library. Information on interlibrary loan is available from the Kansas State Historical Society and on its web site, http://www.kshs.org. Support for telephone, mail and online research and reference is limited.
In a continuing effort to improve the completeness and accuracy of finding aids, revisions are made as more or new information becomes available. Consequently, this finding aid may differ slightly from what appears on the microfilm or in paper form.
Descriptions are often based on a preliminary inspection of the material. As such, they may contain misspellings or other inaccuracies based on folder headings and other sources within the materials. As the collections are arranged and as time permits, these finding aids are improved and corrected. If you spot an error, please feel free to report it to the reference staff or an archivist.

History
Herbert Jesse Neff, father of the collection’s lender, William White Cloud Neff, compiled these records. It should be noted that the name Neff was originally Nave or Knave and was changed to its contemporary form sometime between 1840 and1850 during the life of James Neff.
Scope and Content
In its original form this collection consists of pages measuring 8.5 x 15 inches in plastic page protectors. These pages are bound in two large post binders. The microfilm shows the collection in its original order. There is some duplication of material from the first book to the second.
This collection is organized into two distinct series. The first contains pedigree charts and related genealogical records. The first page of the first series is not only a pedigree chart, but also has the photographs of nearly everyone listed on the chart. Subsequent pedigree charts, arranged alphabetically by individuals’ names, list people with their life dates, birth and death places, and other pertinent information dating back to Manuel Robidoux (born ca. 1600) of St. Germain, France. Though Herbert Neff's research delved mainly into Iowa tribal genealogy and history, Series 1 does contain a considerable amount of genealogical information on the following families: Pickens, Luntsford, Harris, Hight, and Robidoux, among others. Also included in the first series are color illustrations of some of the chiefs of the Iowa Indians, dating back to Chief Mahaska I (White Cloud), born in 1784.
The second series consists largely of copies of annuity payroll records, treaties, Indian census rolls, and related documents. Annuity payroll records are records of cash payments made by the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs to Indians living on reservations. This volume is organized topically with general information at the beginning, followed by maps, a census list, a list of first chiefs, and chronological sections documenting tribal history & the Iowa tribe in Oklahoma. It is these two latter portions of the volume that contain most of the annuity payrolls and census records, although there is also information on treaties, removal to Kansas, land, head – money, and allotments.
There are a number of color portraits of some of the Iowa Indian chiefs included in this collection; color that had to be sacrificed to black and white microfilm. The original color prints have been returned to the collection's owner.
Contents List
Arrangement
Arranged into two series reflecting the two volumes in the collection.
Contents
v. 1. Pedigree charts and genealogical notes — v. 2. Genealogical notes and U.S. Office of Indian Affairs annuity payroll records.
Microfilm List
Archival records are typically organized by series, a group of records that has a common element or function and a distinct organizational structure of its own, for example Correspondence Files, arranged chronologically, or Registers of Military Enlistments, arranged by regiment.
This finding aid divides the collection into 2 series. Each of the two volumes constitutes a separate series. Volume 2 is divided into sections, and these are noted on the contents list below, as the volume is on more than one roll of microfilm.
The 2 rolls of microfilm are available on a self - service basis in the Research Room or may be borrowed from the Kansas State Historical Society through interlibrary loan.
