The Cover
Water color of the Battle of Mine Creek, October 25, 1864, painted by Samuel J. Reader of Topeka and reproduced from his manuscript autobiography, which is based on his diary for the year 1864. Reader served briefly in the Second regiment, Kansas State Militia, in October, when the militia was called out to help repulse Confederate Gen. Sterling Price's raid on Missouri and Kansas. The painting on the back cover, called by Reader "Southern Battleflag Cut Down," is from the same volume.
