The Cover

A diorama depicting the arrival of traders at the Pawnee Indian village in present northwest Republic county in the 1820s. The artist, William L. Philyaw of Independence, Mo., has attempted to model the lodges and people as they probably appeared 150 years ago.

This diorama is one of two among the exhibits at the state's Pawnee Indian Village Museum about two miles southwest of Republic, Kan.
