The Cover
Samuel J. Reader, early day diarist and folk artist of Shawnee county, later sized up the 1859-1860 gold rush to western Kansas (now Colorado) by depicting in water colors a relative as he might have looked "Going to Pike's Peak," and then his return, broke. The sketches are superimposed here on a Rocky Mountain News extra of June 11, 1859, courtesy the Newberry Library, Chicago. (See "Gold Fever" article, pp. 58-74.)
