The Cover

Albert Bierstadt's painting, "Wolf River, Kansas," depicts a crossing frequently used by Oregon trail travelers in the vicinity of the Iowa, Sac and Fox Presbyterian mission near Highland. The artist is said to have painted it in the late 1860s, following considerable travel in the American West.

The original work is in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the transparency was lent by the Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York City. Permission to publish this reproduction is gratefully acknowledged to both institutions.

(See opposite page for Bierstadt's 1859 photograph of Wolf river.)
