The Cover

The Newton depot and yard office of the Santa Fe, from a black and white photograph of 1871. The color has been added.

The advertising poster (center of the page) was issued in the early 1880s, and emphasizes the railroad's stride toward Pacific coast connections. For a time Santa Fe construction in California was blocked by the Southern Pacific. Before the end of the decade, however, the Santa Fe was operating over its own lines to the coast.
