The Cover
"Reproduced on the cover (in reverse?) are two watercolors by John Gaddis, who was a member of company E, 12th Wisconsin volunteer infantry, which had a walking tour of duty in Kansas during March-May, 1862. The upper drawing depicts the regiment marching through Tecumseh April 21 on its way to Fort Riley, and lower, its March 27 arrival at Fort Lincoln, located about 12 miles northwest of Fort Scott.
