Branch of Service Home County:

Database of approximately 5200 Kansans who served in World War I, compiled from three separate sources:

  • Index to entries in Manuscript Collection 49. In about 1919, the historical society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in the service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records, although the quantity of materials in each file varies greatly.
  • Index to Kansas Casualties in the World War, 1917-1919, published by the Kansas Adjutant General in 1921 (including three supplements in 1921, 1922, and 1925). [Library call number SP/353.6/K13]
  • Index to Kansans buried in WWI-era American military cemeteries in Europe, from the records of the American Battle Monuments Commission.

These three indexes have been combined here. If a soldier is listed in all three, there is only one record in the database. The information available on a particular individual depends on the source in which he appears. Not every soldier will have the same amount of information.

Manuscript Collection 49 may contain photographs, most of which have been removed to Photographs Collection 12. Please contact the KSHS Reference Desk for further information on materials in this collection.
