Introduction

Abstract

Card index to pension applications of veterans who served in Kansas regiments of the U.S. Army between 1861 and 1917. Each card gives the soldier's name, rank, unit, & terms of service; names of relationships of any dependents; application & certificate numbers; and the State from which the claim was filed. A few Iowa and Kentucky regiments are also included. Forms part of: records of the U.S. Veterans Administration (MS. collection no. 2015). Microfilm. Agency History

The Veterans Administration was established as an independent federal agency by Executive Order 5398, 21 July 1930, in accordance with an act of 3 July 1930 (46 Stat. 1016), which authorized the merger of the Bureau of Pensions, the U.S. Veterans Bureau, the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, and functions of the Office of the Surgeon General concerned with providing artificial limbs and other appliances to veterans.

Predecessor organizations that provided military pensions and related services included the Military Bounty Lands and Pension Branch (ca. 1810 – 15), Pension Bureau (1815 – 33), & Office of Commissioner of Pensions (1833 – 49) in the War Department; the Bureau of Pensions, Department of the Interior (1849 – 1930); the Bureau of War Risk Insurance, Treasury Department (1914 – 21); the Rehabilitation Division, Federal Board for Vocational Education (1918 – 21); the Veterans Bureau (1921); and the U.S. Veterans Bureau (1921 – 30). Homes for disabled soldiers were formerly a function of the National Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers of the United States (1866 – 73) and the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (1873 – 1930). The Office of the Surgeon General in the War Department supplied artificial limbs and other devices to veterans (1862 – 1930).

At the time these records were created, bounty?land grants and military pensions were administered by the Bureau of Pensions within the U.S. Department of the Interior by an act of 3 March 1849 (9 Stat. 395).

The Veterans Administration administered laws relating to benefits and relief for veterans and for spouses and dependents of disabled or deceased veterans.
The agency was abolished 15 March 1989 and replaced by the cabinet - level Department of Veterans Affairs in accordance with the Department of Veterans Affairs Act (102 Stat. 2635), 25 October 1988.

The successor agency is the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Scope and Content Note

The index cards reproduced on this microfilm publication refer to pension applications of veterans who served in the U.S. Army between 1861 and 1917. The majority of the records pertain to Civil War veterans, but they also include veterans of the Spanish?American War, the Philippine Insurrection, Indian wars.

The information provided here is virtually the same as that in the General Index to Pension Files, 1861 – 1934, National Archives microfilm publication T288. Unlike the alphabetical General Index, however, this index groups the applicants according to the units in which they served.
Each card gives the soldier's name, rank, unit, and terms of service; names of relationships of any dependents; the application number; the certificate number; and the State from which the claim was filed.

The Kansas State Historical Society owns only those rolls containing information on Kansas military units. A few units in Iowa appear on the first roll; similarly, a few Kentucky regiments are on the last roll.

Organization of the records

The cards for most States are arranged alphabetically by State, thereunder by arm of service (infantry, cavalry, artillery), thereunder numerically by regiment, and thereunder alphabetically by veteran's surname. In Kansas, however, because some units were not clearly infantry or cavalry, the cards for cavalry and infantry regiments are organized numerically by regiment, disregarding the arm of service. Artillery regiments are at the end.
