Read Kansas! Intermediate - I-03 Famous Kansans

This lesson is designed to help fourth grade students develop abilities in writing persuasive text. Students will read biography cards on several famous Kansans. They will select one of those people and write a persuasive nomination for that individual for inclusion in a Hall of Fame. This lesson is designed to take four days to complete, but can be adjusted according to student abilities. Suggestions for extended activities are also included. Standard #3:  Societies are shaped by beliefs, ideas, and diversity.

  • Benchmark 3.1: The student will recognize and evaluate significant beliefs, contributions, and ideas of the many diverse peoples and groups and their impact on individuals, communities, states, and nations.

Kansas College and Career Readiness Standards

  • RF 4.4.a: The student will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension and read on-level text with purpose and understanding.
  • W 4.1: The student will write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
  • SL 4.1 (a-d): The student engages effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
