Abstract: This collection consists of various kinds of railroad records. Most of the records were created by or relate to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company and include correspondence; way bills; engineering correspondence; payroll correspondence; general manager office files; correspondence concerning railroad passes; locomotive service reports; monthly reports on condition of power; monthly time books; circulars; publications; ticket sale reports; records concerning the Hours of Service Act, 1930; personnel matters; Eastern Division building records; lists of officers, stations, and agents; and train dispatcher rosters. In addition there are several oversize volumes and blueprints of the Santa Fe logo. The collection includes maps & blueprints and 1 folder of Santa Fe emblems.

Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full):

Charles "Bud" Goebel was born near Burlingame, Kansas, on 27 June 1898, the son of Charles and Mary E. O'Mara Goebel. He started work for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company 9 October 1917 and was an employee of the Railway for nearly forty-six years. He started as a cashier in Burlingame; two years later he was transferred to Woodward, Oklahoma, only to be transferred back to Kansas (Osage City) within three months.

In 1933 Bud moved to Emporia, where he served as rate clerk and night warehouse foreman. He moved to Topeka as chief clerk to the agent in 1940. Eleven years later he became the freight agent in Atchison, the position from which he retired on 30 June 1963.

He married Frances Lafferty 30 June 1920, at Osage City; she died 26 April 1937. He married for the second time to Pearl Harding on 4 September 1943; she died 24 July 1976. His son, Kenneth, died in 1943 at the age of 22, and his daughter, Barbara (Brooks), died 10 July 1986.

Mr. Goebel belonged to several railroad historical societies as well as to the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka.

He died in Topeka on 5 January 1987 at the age of 88.

Scope and Content

Scope and content: This collection consists of thirty-four oversize volumes of various kinds of railroad records, a good many of which are payroll records for the Eastern and Gulf divisions of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company; there are also 15 document boxes which contain a variety of records: some engineering correspondence (Santa Fe); motive power reports which include fuel performance and locomotive testing reports; passes of all kinds; personnel and payroll records of the Santa Fe General Manager's Office in Topeka, Kansas; waybills, receipts, reports and orders from several different railroads; Burlingame(Santa Fe) station correspondence, including a few items from some other Kansas Santa Fe stations; several maps; drawings of Santa Fe emblems; ticket sales reports for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad; a 1887 construction journal of the Chicago, Kansas & Western Railroad; various small journals and notebooks having to do with railroads; monthly time books (Santa Fe Gulf and Coast lines); and various records and correspondence relating to the hardware business of H.W. Filley & Sons in Burlingame, Kansas. Other oversize volumes contain reports of various kinds, vouchers, insurance schedules, a list of Santa Fe buildings and station demurrage payment for detention of freight cards beyond the usual time allowed at Alma, Kansas. Finally there is one folder of letters to Goebel's son, Kenneth, from Wiliam Mitchell, telling of his work with the Manhattan, Alma and Burlingame Railroad in 1939-1941.
