Stevens were the first to open a wholesale house in Leavenworth, Kansas. These papers are written from Phillip A. Emery of Baldwin City to the governor requesting to borrow money to improve the deaf-mute institution. The Kansas State School for the Deaf was founded by Phillip Emery and is the oldest state educational institution in Kansas. The school is known for its academic excellence in pre-college preparation as well as its career and transition program. The school is now located in Olathe, Kansas.
