Scope and Content

Scope and content: The following documents concern matters regarding Native Americans in Kansas. Many of the letters discuss Native American attacks in counties in Kansas in which the settlers ask the Governor for protection. Other letters request Governor Harvey aid the families suffering from attacks made on them or their land. A letter from J. Jackson of Ellsworth, Kansas, reports he saw a party of Native Americans crossing railroads on their way North. Another letter gives an account of an attack and killing of Pawnee Native Americans by citizens Ellsworth, Kansas. Further letters discuss disputes among Native Americans and settlers about soil, give reports on Native American activity, and petitions requesting the Governors construct a fort where settlers can get help against Native Americans with the greatest speed.
