Scope and Content

Scope and content: The documents in this file pertain to matters of relief in the State of Kansas. Many of the documents will not be discussed but all concern relief aid. A letter on February 21, 1872, from Railroad General Manager, T. J. Peters, grants the request for free transportation of relief goods for the poor in the west. A letter on February 21, 1871, from N. O. Wilke, states that a citizen is trying to get a bill through the Kansas Legislature to acquire seed wheat for the destitute of Republic County. A letter, February 29, 1872, from County Clerk, W. T. Nicholas, certifies that the individuals listed on the enclosed certificate are impoverished and in need of items stated in the certificate. Additional documents include other certificates from counties in the west certifying the destitution of certain individuals. During early settlement, many settlers were not familiar with Kansas land and weather and did not know how to properly farm the lands.
