Scope and content: The documents in this file pertain to the appointment of Commissioner of Deeds for Kansas. Many of the documents are letters of application from potential candidates, petitions, or recommendations for specific individuals as Commissioner of Deeds. A letter of application on November 14, 1877, from Daniel S. Mann for the appointment as Commissioner of Deeds of Kansas. In the application, Mann states he has been in the Real Estate business for ten years and is desirous of increasing his business. A letter on September 6, 1877, from Ben F. Hillery of New York, requests the position as Commissioner of Deeds for the State of Kansas. A letter on May 3, 1877, from William Bowers of New York, encloses recommendations for his role as Commissioner of Deeds for Kansas. A petition on March 29, 1877, states Henry Bischoff has an excellent reputation and character and is well qualified to carry out the duties of the office of Commissioners in Kansas.
