Summary: Photograph of the old mission church which was built by the Indians under the direction of the early Spanish soldiers and missionaries between 1612 and 1632. It was finally destroyed in a bombardment by American soldiers putting down an insurrection by the natives in the year 1847. The tower is still standing and what was once the interior of the church is now filled with graves. The two Indian boys in the picture] needed a good deal of persuasion before they would enter the graveyard. Seat of the last opposition to American conquest in what is now the state of New Mexico. Rebels who killed first American Governor General Bent, barricaded themselves in this mission and refused to submit until U.S. Artillery had leveled the Church. Taos New Mexico unknown date
