Summary: Photograph shows the Cross of the Martyrs, located on a small hilltop .7 tenths of a mile from the Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For over 200 years religious services (consisting of vespers and a sermon one evening in September) have been observed on this spot in keeping with the order of the Governor of the Province to commensurate the "redemption of the ancient capital from the possession of the Indians." This cross is located at the spot where General de Vargas camped prior to re-conquering the village in 1692. The cross has been erected to perpetuate the memory of those pious martyrs of Christianity who lost their lives in this rebellion of 1680--the Catholic Friars. Date unknown
