“Female Buffalo Soldier: The Traditional Story and the Rest of the Story of Cathey Williams/William Cathey”

Speaker Dr. Leo E. Oliva talks about the fascinating story of Cathey Williams. Born into slavery in the 1840s, this African American woman went on to become the first enlisted female soldier in the U.S. Army. By switching her name around in 1866, she enlisted and served as Private William Cathey in the Black regiment of Company A, 38th U.S. Infantry. Although her years in the military were short, she became well known during post-Civil War America as the first female Buffalo Soldier.

This program will also stream live on the Kansas Historical Society YouTube channel.
