Richard Nichols

Richard Nichols, a one-term Kansas congressman, was born in Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas, on April 29, 1926. He attended the public schools, served as an ensign in the United States Navy from 1944 to1947, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University in 1951. Nichols worked as informational counsel for the Kansas State Board of Agriculture, associate farm director of a radio and television station in Topeka, agricultural representative for a Hutchinson bank, and as president and chairman of the board of the Home State Bank, McPherson, Kansas, starting in 1969. A life-long Republican, Nichols served as a member of the Kansas State Republican Executive Committee, a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1988, and as party chair of the Fifth Congressional District from 1986 to 1990. Nichols was elected as to the One Hundred Second Congress in 1990 (served, January 3, 1991-January 3, 1993), but was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1992-his Fifth District was eliminated in the redistricting of that year, and Nichols had to face the always-popular Pat Roberts in the First District primary. Nichols is a resident of McPherson, Kansas.
