Beyond Lewis and Clark - Timeline 1819-1820
The Army Explores The West
Major Stephen Long (1784-1864)
Major Stephen Long’s 1819-1820 expedition developed out of U.S. concerns over British interest in the northern Plains. His expedition eventually was redirected to map the central Plains to the Rocky Mountains. Long was the first Army explorer to include professional scientists on his survey team. He also was the first to use a steamboat for exploration purposes.
Beyond Lewis and Clark is an online exhibit developed by the Kansas Museum of History. It is the result of a partnership between the Kansas Historical Society, the Virginia and Washington State historical societies, the U. S. Army's Frontier Army Museum at Leavenworth, and the U. S. Army Center of Military History.
