Grinter Place - Exhibits
Moses and Annie Grinter completed their two-story red brick home in 1857 on a hill overlooking the Kansas River. The oldest home in Wyandotte County, the house is constructed with home-kilned bricks on the exterior and native walnut and white pine on the interior. A parlor, dining room, central hall, kitchen, and three fireplaces are located on the first floor. The second floor consists of a parlor, two bedrooms, and two fireplaces.
The rooms are furnished to resemble those occupied by the Grinters from 1875 to 1900. Only a few of these items belonged to the Grinter family; the rest are antiques authentic to the era. Visitors can see:
- Tall cupboard with open shelves, which Moses acquired in trade when a client could not pay the ferry fee
- Table with decorative pattern; a Grinter family piece
- Two Grinter family Bibles
- Annie’s quilt blocks
- Grinter family photographs
- Lounge with crazy quilt
- Union cavalry sword
- Violin
