The Collections Archivist will help plan and implement collections development policies and procedures for non-government records of all formats in the State Archives Division, including the acquisition, management, description and access for analog, born-digital and web-only newspapers and other publications, manuscripts, photographs, maps and plans, and audio and video and related formats as needed. The Collections Archivist will play a leading role in advancing the transition from paper acquisitions of newspapers and other publications to digital-only and web-only acquisitions and establish standards-based procedures for acquiring and managing such born digital materials. The Collections Archivist will also contribute knowledge to the planning and implementation of a Trusted Digital Repository for born-digital collections

The employee assists in developing the strategic direction for the State Archives Division’s public records program. The employee provides advice and assistance on records management and preservation practices; develops records retention and disposition schedules for state and county government agencies; provides technical assistance in planning, coordinating, and evaluating public records program activities; identifies, appraises, acquires, arranges, describes, and preserves Kansas government records (analog and digital) deemed to possess enduring value; assists with workshops and other training activities; utilizes a variety of computer databases; prepares statistics; assists in preparing grant applications; assists in evaluating received gran applications; and participates in strategic planning.

K0244319 Kaw Mission Assistant Site Administrator (Council Grove) | State of Kansas | Position Description

Part-time educational/informational assistant position at Kaw Mission State Historic and Last Chance Store in Council Grove. This position works 20 hours per week. Applicant will need to have a flexible schedule for tours, events, and maintenance that may occur outside of regular hours. Responsible for operating the site during and outside of public hours, including opening and closing, presenting historical information to visitors to Kaw Mission and Last Chance Store State Historic Site, coordinating with the local support group, and maintaining the buildings and grounds. Additionally, the position is responsible for learning and running the TAM computer system for museum store sales, attendance, and closing. There is a high level of physical activity and attention to detail associated with this position.

Percentages are approximate and will vary depending on changing needs. Areas require a high level of hygiene and special attention to details, extreme attention and care is necessary when working with collections and in highly secured collection areas. The Kansas Historical Society represents millions of dollars in facilities and collections, which require professional care to maintain and preserve their condition.

Kansas Historical Foundation

The Historical Foundation employs people in fundraising, retail sales, membership development, and clerical positions. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation that supports the programs of the Historical Society. Job openings will be posted here when available and include information about application procedures.

Ripley Internship | Description

The Kansas State Historical Society, Inc., dba Kansas Historical Foundation, is seeking applications for the John Ripley Internship. This internship is available to any Shawnee County Kansas resident or Washburn University student. The intern will receive a $2,500 stipend, payable in two installments, and will be required to work a minimum of 300 hours between June and August 2023. These summer hours provide for a flexible schedule within business hours. Intern responsibilities will be discussed on an individual basis, but could include projects from any Foundation department, including administration, membership, or retail.
