Kansas Historical Society - Location Shoots

The Kansas Historical Society is a popular location for filming news and documentary programs, as well as conducting interviews with staff members. Learn more about the associated costs.

Photography on the grounds of our facilities in Topeka and at State Historic Sites is permitted as these are public spaces.

Fees

Usage fees will be negotiated for certain indoor shooting and will depend on the nature of the project, number, and type of images (length of shooting), and the intended audience or distribution.

An access fee of $250 is applicable, plus a usage fee of $175 per set up. The basic access fee for the shoot, which requires the special presence of maintenance, security, or other staff, such as a project that requests the opening of the grounds, a Historical Society facility after regular hours, or special assistance beyond regular services, is $20 per hour.

Conditions

The following conditions apply to commercial or for-profit indoor shooting:
a. permission is granted only for one-time usage;
b. company provides proof of insurance;
c. an appropriate credit-line must be included in the final product;
d. a copy of the final product must be provided to the Historical Society; and
e. Historical Society reserves the right to refuse permission to photograph inside Historical Society property if association with the proposed products or commercial entity conflicts with or detracts from the mission and/or image of the Historical Society.

No shooting shall interfere with the ability of the Historical Society staff members to do their jobs; the public’s enjoyment of the site; public participation in Historical Society programming; public or staff safety; or the preservation of Historical Society artifacts or property(ies).
