John Steuart Cury - Kansas Pastoral

Kansas Pastoral by John Steuart Curry, second floor rotunda, entrance to the east wing. (South wall)

Kansas Pastoral is Curry’s attempt at showing the more romantic side of the agricultural state. His critics thought otherwise. The Hereford bull was too red, too long, and his neck was too thick. A Hereford cattleman from Lebo defended him saying Curry’s critics had never seen a finely bred bull.  He declared the painting “excellent.”

Critics complained that the nighttime prairie scene could be mistaken for an ocean with a seal (coyote) and ship masts (oil derricks).
