October is Archives Month

October is Archives Month October 2018 is Archives Month!

Since 2006, American Archives Month has given the profession an opportunity to tell (or remind) people that items that are important to them are being preserved, cataloged, cared for, and made accessible by archivists.

The Society of American Archivists (SAA) and the Council of State Archivists (CoSA) have joined together to develop a coordinated nationwide annual observance of Archives Month. CoSA lends support for this effort by providing access to a variety of resources through their website. They believe that American Archives Month provides an excellent opportunity for educating the public and resource providers about the work that archivists do and why it is so important. SAA also provides a variety of tools to promote and educate the public on the importance of archives during the month of October.

Historical records are essential to understanding our past, and supporting a democratic society. Kansas Archives Month is a time to focus on the importance of records of enduring value and to enhance public recognition for the people and programs that are responsible for maintaining our communities' vital historical records.

In the course of daily life, individuals, organizations, and governments create and keep information about their activities.

Archivists are professionals who:

  • assess,
  • collect,
  • organize,
  • preserve, and
  • provide access to the portions of this information that have lasting value.

Archivists keep records that have enduring value as reliable memories of the past, and they help people find and understand the information they need in those records.Join the Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board (KSHRAB) and archives across the nation in recognizing October as American Archives Month. KSHRAB sponsors activities and promotions for American Archives Month with funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).
