Read Kansas! Intermediate - I-09 Immigrant Contributions
The purpose of this lesson is to help fourth grade students understand the contributions to Kansas made by immigrants. It encourages cooperative learning and helps the students to practice their skills at finding the main ideas within an expository text. The students will present information to the class and all students will record the main ideas of the readings on a graphic organizer. The lesson is designed to take place during one class session. Kansas History, Government and Social Studies Standards:
Standard #3: Societies are shaped by beliefs, ideas, and diversity.
- 1.1: The student will recognize and evaluate significant beliefs, contributions, and ideas of the many diverse peoples and groups and their impact on individuals, communities, states, and nations.
Kansas College and Career Ready Standards:
- RI.4.2.: The student determines the meaning the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.
- SL.4.1 a-d: The student will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- SL.4.4: The student will report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
