This middle school lesson explores the Wyandotte Constitution with respect to the civil rights of women and African Americans. Students have the opportunity to use a speech by a delegate to the constitutional convention as a primary source, analyzing it as a persuasive text. This lesson is written for two class periods. Kansas History, Government and Social Studies Standards:
Standard #2 Individuals have rights and responsibilities.
- 2.2: The student will analyze the context under which significant rights and responsibilities are defined and demonstrated, their various interpretations, and draw conclusions about those interpretations.
- 2.4: The student will use his/her understanding of rights and responsibilities to address contemporary issues.
Kansas College and Career Ready Standards:
- RH.6-8.2: The student determines the central ideas of information of a primary or secondary source, provides an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
- WHST.6-8.1(a-e): The student writes arguments focused on discipline-specific content.
- SL.7.1(a-e): The student will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
