Traveling Resource Trunks

Continual Learning Options

While using the physical objects in a trunk is best, the trunks listed here can most easily be adapted for distance learning.  Lesson plans, photos of the objects contained in the trunks, primary sources, worksheets, and more can be found for these trunks through the links to their manuals and cds.

Borrowing a Traveling Trunk

I love being able to put something from history into the hands of my students. It's amazing. That one arrowhead can hook their attention and help them engage in the lesson better than any other teaching technique I use. - Jill, 7th grade teacher

Bring Kansas history to you! This exciting series of traveling resource trunks is created for teachers, youth group leaders, museums, libraries, retirement centers, and other Kansans looking for a unique and educational way to share the rich heritage of Kansas with others. Each trunk focuses on a specific topic in Kansas history and contains enough high-quality reproductions of historical artifacts and documents and photographs for your students to have a personal experience with the past. This is a great way for students to learn historical thinking skills, practice asking questions about the past, study history from multiple-perspectives, and share their knowledge through creative activities. A teaching manual is included in each trunk. The trunks have suggested grade levels but can be borrowed for any age group.

Trunks are loaned within the state of Kansas and can be reserved for up to a four-week period. Reservations begin and end on a Wednesday.  They will be shipped out on Wednesday, or borrowers can make arrangements to pick them up at their convenience at the Kansas Historical Society in Topeka.  Borrowers are responsible for return arrangements and  costs.

Trunks are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Trunks should be reserved a minimum of two weeks in advance, but we recommend making your reservation early when possible.  Reservations can be made for the current and the next school years. Your order will be final when you receive an e-mail or written confirmation.

A handling fee of $30 is charged for each trunk. Borrowers will be invoiced a month before the reservation begins.  Handling fees are refundable for cancellations with a minimum of two weeks notice.
