Caldwell, Martha B. "When Horace Greeley Visited Kansas in 1859." Kansas Historical Quarterly 9 (May 1940): 115-140. The author discusses Greeley's decision to make a trip West and his plans (and subsequent trek through) to visit Kansas of which he had written a great deal. He planned his trip so as to be in Osawatomie for the convention that was scheduled for purposes of organizing the Republican party in Kansas--May 18, 1859.
